I looked into the SteamVR logs, and went to the compositor section

    Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.467 - VR compositor (v1485823399) starting up

    Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.467 - RuntimePath : D:\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\

    Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.483 - Events created

Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.490 - Initializing generic graphics device resources...

Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.958 - Headset display is on desktop

    Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.958 - Invalid adapter (-1, -1) specified!

Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.960 - Failed to initialize compositor

    Sun Feb 12 2017 10:22:21.960 - Failed to start compositor: VRInitError_Compositor_Failed

So the invalid adapter (-1, -1) is causing all this but I have no idea how to fix it, I tried looking in the SteamVR for that issue but I didn't find a working solution.

    Can someone help me ?

Did you install the FOVE SteamVR driver? (different from the normal SteamVR, you need both)

The FOVE SteamVR driver is available after entering in that code, but it does not install automatically and has to be manually installed.

Yes, but I figured it out !

I had to disable the Fove autostart compositor in the Fove manager, and then launch SteamVR back.

Also, be carfeful to Oculus owners. You can't run both services at the same time.

I have already installed both SteamVR and the FOVE driver with it with the beta key I received from the Email.

My auto-start compositor is already disabled too, still my SteamVR doesn't want to run the compositor (Still gives me the invalid adapter (-1, -1) specified).

I've concluded that Fove (after working though without positional tracking) has hosed my Vive setup. By looking at the room overview, I can see that SteamVR seems to think I'm still trying to use Fove and won't start the compositor even though I've uninstalled Fove software, removed the hardware and reinstalled Vive (can see all the USB devices). How do I reset things to get steamvr back on my Fove? Seems like the issue others are having here is the other way around, but the same general issue and a clear resolution to one might apply to the other.

Thought to retry Room Setup and couldn't get anywhere which led me to uninstalling SteamVR again and manually deleting remnants and after reinstall, the issue still existed and that got me thinking. I did a search for "fove" and realized that I still had the Fove SteamVR Driver installed. Removed and Vive is good again. I'm sure this is oversimplified, but to anyone having issues getting Fove working with SteamVR, be sure you've installed the Fove SteamVR Driver (only available by invite into the beta at this time and must be installed through Steam, not a download on getfove.com) and if you want Vive (or other OpenVR hardware) back, UNINSTALL it.

What you said makes sense and it's good to know for any Vive User. Though I don't own any Vive, my SteamVR FOVE driver is already installed and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling about 5 times already in Steam. Yeah the one that needs a key received by email and that needs to be installed manually after being downloaded in Steam. I hope there's another solution coming out soon, I can't wait to be able to start using it in SteamVR.

Something else just occurred to me. Having installed Oculus Home, I can disconnect my Vive, connect my Rift CV1 (do room setup again) and use it, then switch back (again needing to do room setup) easily enough. I wonder why I have to uninstall the Fove SteamVR driver to go back to another HMD.

Just to keep this updated, I tried it again with the new version of the driver and everything worked now. Don't know if it's because of the driver or if it's plain luck but it works!
