Have had my Fove for a few weeks now, and have to say it works fantastic in Elite: Dangerous.
The only problem I have is that I can't touch type. So to type out something in the Chat, which you need to when meeting new commanders, I have to take the HMD off my face to see the keyboard. That's when it hit me: We have IR eye tracking, so surely they could see which key the eyes are focused on?
It could work by having a standard key assigned as a "Show Keyboard" that pops an overlay over the top of the existing video output. (Key could be mapped to a joystick button or whatever.) The Fove software then takes over to track what key your eye is looking at, and you press another button (like A on the controller) to select that key. If the software was programmed with some smarts, only the next letter of viable words would be highlighted to be able to be selected. (Like if you start a word with L, then it would not highlight the letter X as a possible hit zone.)
So you build up your sentence or word in this fashion, and then when the sentence is finished, a different button is pressed and those letters and numbers are passed back to the client as if they typed it in themselves.
